About Us

Skagit Seed Services, Inc. is a seed production, processing and coating company located in the Skagit Valley of Northwest Washington State. Skagit Seed Services is owned and operated by the Hulbert Family, third generation seed producers with a tradition of integrity and quality. Our seed production, processing and coating business grew out of our knowledge as seed growers and our willingness to work with our customers to meet their needs.

Our History

The Hulbert Family moved from Fontanelle, Iowa to Skagit Valley, Washington in 1909, and established a stock and dairy farm on the farmstead in the La Conner Flats. James H. Hulbert, Sr. grew hay and oats and began producing vegetable seed in 1919. He grew for various small seed companies including Lassen, Associated Seed Growers, and Ferry Morse.

Jim’s sons, James Jr. (Jim) and Robert (Bob), joined their father in the farm operation in 1949. The farm transitioned from a dairy farm to a crop farm specializing in strawberries, broccoli, cauliflower and vegetable seed crops. In the mid-1960s, Hulbert Farms was approached by Ferry Morse Seed Company to manage their receiving, drying, scalping and shipping of seed grown in Skagit Valley. The business grew and by the early 1970s, Hulbert Farms was also working with Keystone Seed Company and Pieters-Wheeler.

In 1989, the seed production side of our business was expanded, and Skagit Seed Services was formed to differentiate our farming activities from our seed production and processing. With the installation of two conditioning lines, Skagit Seed Services was able to offer the customer quality finished seed. In 1995, Skagit Seed again expanded our seed processing facility to offer seed treating and pelleting services to seed dealers and growers of the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

Following Bob and Jim Jr.’s retirements, Jim’s sons Tom and Jack continue to operate Hulbert Farms and Skagit Seed Services. We continue the tradition of providing quality seed and seed processing services to the international and domestic seed industry. Over the years we have worked hard to maintain a tradition of personal attention to each and every customer. We are proud of that heritage and grateful for your support as we celebrate three generations of service to the seed industry.
